Thunderbird saves the filter rules in the ‘msfilterrules.dat’ file. You can edit them, but it is easier to customize them using the free extension ‘Message Filter Import/ Export. It integrates a menu command for managing filter rules in the e –mail client. This useful tool is available on http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2474. Click on ‘Install’ and navigate to the downloaded XPI file and open it. Click on ‘Install now’ to start the setup and restart Thunderbird.
