The search engine giant, has unveiled its online publishing service — Knol. This service is a competitor to the much famous Wikipedia. Knol allows users to write articles on specific topics and to make money from them. The service is likely to compete with online encyclopedia Wikipedia.Differentiating from Wikipedia, Knol will allow many articles that will make a collection of blogs on
topic. It also allows users to have their byline to the articles they publish. However, unlike Wikipedia that allows to edit
user’s entry, Knol will only allow others to comment on the article. Users can also elect to run ads sold by Google on their entries and can share in the revenue from them.

Google’s service is just one of a number that try to make it easier for users to self-publish articles and establish their authority online. But many such services have struggled to gain scale and to give users incentive to post content.
Still, the service could help Google by giving it new Web pages on which to run ads. Knol entries can include text or photos but soon other media would also be supported. Google doesn’t prefilter entries, which encompass topics ranging form tooth pain to lung cancer. The service is policed by users, who can flag inappropriate and copyrighted content for removal.
Google also appears to be viewing the service as an opportunity to form partnerships with media companies. In conjunction with the launch, Google announced an agreement with Condé Nast’s The New Yorker magazine to allow Knol users to integrate New Yorker cartoons into their entries.
