Fujitsu LifeBook U1010 - Ultra Mobile PC
The Intel A110 proccessor running at 800MHz and 1GB of DDR2-400 memory form the core of this device. The list of components that are squeezed into the 610 g box is endless—a 1.8-inch 40 GB hard disk, 5.6-inch touch screen LCD, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, webcam, fingerprint reader, SD Card reader, Type II CF Card reader and a single USB port. An Ethernet port and video-output (via D-sub) are provided via a dongle. That’s more than a mouthful for such a tiny gizmo! With an all-round feature set, the U1010 is nearly as capable as a laptop.PERFORMANCE: It would be unfair to compare the performance of this little thing to that of a laptop. However, to give you a rough idea, entry-level laptops are four to five times faster than this device. But since ultra-mobile PCs are strictly meant for storage, Internet access, and office applications on the move, you don’t need a powerful machine. What’s more With the launch of Intel’s Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, we will now get to see full- fledged PCs in pocket-size form factors. The first such PC to make its entry into the CHIP Test Center was the Fujitsu LifeBook U1010.
BUILD QUALITY AND ERGONOMICS: The Fujitsu U1010 is built quite robustly—it can easily take occasional shocks during journeys on inconvenient roads. It has an entirely matt finish so you won’t need to be overtly cautious about fingerprints and stains. However, make sure that your hands are clean before you handle the white exterior to maintain it well. The smaller the device, the more challenging it is for any manufacturer to achieve an ergonomic design. However, apart from the size of the keyboard which is restricted by the form factor, Fujitsu has done a great job. The device is designed for two-handed operation while being held. Hence, the mouse buttons and pointing stick are placed on the left and right top edges respectively. Because the keyboard is limited by the number of keys, many functions including the arrow keys are operable only in combination with the ‘Function’ key which is placed to the left of the ‘Win’ key.
VERDICT: The Fujitsu UlOlO is an excellent and stylish solution for those constantly on the move or even for those who want to flaunt the smallest PC around! FOR: Packed with loads of features, has a
robust build.
AGAINST: No support for 3G, poor battery life for an ultra-mobile PC.
