With an injection of methanol, the fuel-cell generates electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen to recharge mobile digital electronic devices via a USB cable. The high-tech giant, which sees a bright future for fuel cells, said battery exhaustion had become a “major concern” due to the rising power consumption of mobile electronic devices.
It said the palm-sized fuel-cell, called Dynario, “delivers almost instant refuelling that untethers electrical equipment from AC adapters and power outlets.”

A single refill of methanol from a dedicated cartridge can generate enough power to charge two mobile telephones, said Toshiba, which describes itself as a world leader in the development of fuel-cells for handheld gadgets.
The company will put 3,000 of the devices on sale in Japan through its direct-order website at a price of 29,800 yen (326 dollars) each. The fuel cartridges cost an additional 3,150 yen for a set of five

Nasa’s Mars Rover Opportunity is investigating a metallic meteorite the size of a large watermelon, larger than any other known meteorite on Mars, that is providing researchers more details about the Red Planet’s environmental history.

Scientists calculate that the rock, dubbed “Block Island,” is too massive to have hit the ground without disintegrating unless Mars had a much thicker atmosphere than it has now when the rock fell.

It was discovered two weeks ago, when Opportunity had driven approximately 600 feet past the rock in a Mars region called Meridiani Planum.

An image the rover had taken a few days earlier and stored was then transmitted back to Earth.
The image showed the rock is approximately 2 feet in length, half that in height, and has a bluish tint that distinguishes it from other rocks in the area.

The rover team decided to have Opportunity backtrack for a closer look, eventually touching Block Island with its robotic arm.

“There’s no question that it is an iron-nickel meteorite,” said Ralf Gellert of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

“We already investigated several spots that showed elemental variations on the surface. This might tell us if and how the metal was altered since it landed on Mars,” he said.

The microscopic imager on the rover’s arm revealed a distinctive triangular pattern in Block Island’s surface texture, matching a pattern common in iron-nickel meteorites found on Earth.

“Normally this pattern is exposed when the meteorite is cut, polished and etched with acid,” said Tim McCoy, a rover team member from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

“Sometimes it shows up on the surface of meteorites that have been eroded by windblown sand in deserts, and that appears to be what we see with Block Island,” he added.

Opportunity found a smaller iron-nickel meteorite, called “Heat Shield Rock,” in late 2004.
At about a half-ton or more, Block Island is roughly 10 times as massive as Heat Shield Rock and several times too big to have landed intact without more braking than today’s Martian atmosphere could provide.

“Consideration of existing model results indicates a meteorite this size requires a thicker atmosphere,” said rover team member Matt Golombek of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“Either Mars has hidden reserves of carbon-dioxide ice that can supply large amounts of carbon-dioxide gas into the atmosphere during warm periods of more recent climate cycles, or Block Island fell billions of years ago,” he added.

The Laser Desktop 6000 comprises of a keyboard that is based on Microsoft’s Comfort Curve Design; keys have been placed in an ergonomically approved cur vaceous design to give your fingers the perfect position and comfort for long hours of work. The keyboard is Windows Vista Aero inspired, and that is why Microsoft has incorporated few dedicated Vista Aero shortcut keys. The keyboard has a semi transparent border, much like the Aero windows in Vista.
Apart from the basic keys, the keyboard features loads of shortcut keys, with one-touch access to Windows Flip, Zoom, Mail Client and even 5 programmable keys that you can set according to your preference.
The included wireless mouse uses laser technology, which gives it a more precise control as compared to an optical mouse. The tilt wheel allows it to scroll both hori zontally as well as vertically. If you are looking forward to a gaming solution, then this will not disappoint you with its responsive mouse, but you might find the keys to lack tactile feedback.
The Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 operates at 2.4 GHz wireless radio fre quency, allowing it to con nect and operate smoothly without any interference from other electronic wire less devices connected to your computer.
We found the combo to perform well even over large distances. Microsoft claims the operable limit of the hardware is 40 Feet, and is good enough to give you the freedom to connect it to your HTPC. It worked flaw lessly for us at a distance of about 15 feet. Both devices operate on 2 AA batteries each, and Microsoft claims they will last for 4 months.
Specifications
2.4 Ghz wireless technology, Ergonomic design, Preset and customisable shortcut keys for the keyboard.

The software is designed to be used with the fingers instead of the stylus. The image occupies the entire screen, and all the options such as screen rotate, browsing, zooming and closing are available according to different actions with the finger. The experience is similar to the image viewer on an iPhone. The entire interface has a very liquid feel, with a few bells and whistIes thrown in like a
carrousel view with reflections. Also it is possible to entirely customize it, as it supports skins.
