Artificial brain is 10 years away

A functional artificial human brain will be possible in the next 10 years, according to neuroscientist Henry Markram, who made the announcement at TED Global 2009 at Oxford.

Dr Markram is director of Blue Brain Project, a supercomputing project that can model components of the mammalian brain to precise cellular detail and simulate their activity in 3D. He has already created parts of a fully functioning rat brain.

103rd floor glass balcony: Scary but cool

Visitors to the Sears Tower’s new glass balconies all seem to agree: The first step is the hardest. The balconies are suspended 1,353 feet in the air and jut out four feet from the building’s 103rd floor Skydeck. Their transparent walls, floor and ceiling leave visitors with the impression they’re floating over the city.
“It’s like walking on ice,” said Margaret Kemp, of Bishop, Calif., who said her heart was still pounding even after stepping away from the balcony.

Soon, wheelchairs controlled by tongues

Scientists have developed a novel headset that makes it possible for a person suffering from spinal cord injury to precisely control a wheelchair or computer using the tongue.
The “tongue drive”, being trialled at Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, could also give astronauts a third hand in difficult situations like spacewalks.
