Windows 7 Workstations slow to shutdown

Windows 7 Workstations are very slow (8 min) to shutdown. The problem occurs after the PCs are made members of the WINDOWS 2003 domain. Same issue for PCs on the local LAN or Laptops being shutdown off the network (remote).

Log files show standard items on the PC for a shutdown in the first 60-90 seconds. Then, there is a long 5-7 minute gap where nothing is written to the log files on the PC.

Domain controller(s) still windows 2003. Problem occurs with clean Windows 7 PCs, prior to adding software.

To check if a particular program is slowing the machine when you switch on or shut down, e.g. an antivirus program, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools (in the left pane). On this screen the problem is sometimes shown. If not, click View Performance Details in Event Log (Event Viewer). Events in the 100 series are boot events and I believe those in the 200 series are shut down events. These can be followed up by double-clicking them, then clicking Event Log Online at the bottom.

I faced this problem many a times and often I had to format my PC.But now you dont need to worry the problem can be solved by making simple registry changes as shown in the following methods:

Method 1:

Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box.
Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

In the right hand area, double click hidden and change the value to 1.
Now you’re all set to go. Check it in your tools menu if the changes have taken effect.

Method 2:

1. Click “Start” -> “Run…” (or press Windows key + R)
2. Type “regedit” and click “Ok”.
3. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
4. Look at the “CheckedValue” key… This should be a DWORD key. If it isn’t, delete the key.
5. Create a new key called “CheckedValue” as a DWORD (hexadecimal) with a value of 1.
6. The “Show hidden files & folders” check box should now work normally. Enjoy!

Scientists have created a “kernel” – the basis of a computer’s operating system – that is proven reliable with mathematics, a milestone which they claim will pave the way for a new generation of software with unprecedented levels of reliability.

According to them, the Secure Embedded L4 microkernel has potential applications in defence and other safety and security industries where the flawless operation of complex embedded systems is of critical importance.

“Formal proofs for specific properties have been conducted for smaller kernels, but what we have done is a general, functional correctness proof which has never before been achieved for real-world, high-performance software of this complexity or size,” said Dr Gerwin Klein of NICTA in Australia, who led an international team.

According to the scientists, the proof also shows that many kinds of common attacks will not work on the seL4 kernel.

For instance, the microkernel is impervious to buffer overflows, a common form of software attack where hackers take control of programs by injecting malicious code. “Our kernel cannot be subverted by this kind of attack,” Klein said.

The scientists have successfully verified 7,500 lines of C code and proved over 10,000 intermediate theorems in over 200 000 lines of formal proof.

The proof is machine-checked using the interactive theorem-proving program Isabelle. It is one of the largest machine-checked proofs ever done.

“This is a remarkable achievement,” said co-scientist Yale University’s Zhong Shao. “It makes a significant advance toward building fully verified system software with meaningful dependability guarantees.”

Added co-scientist Lawrence C Paulson of Cambridge University: “It is hard to comment on this achievement without resorting to clichés.

“Proving the correctness of 7,500 lines of C code in an operating system’s kernel is a unique achievement, which should eventually lead to software that meets currently unimaginable standards of reliability.”

Researchers in Germany have devised a technology which activates the horns of parked cars in case of disaster.

The technology is based on the eCall emergency system which new cars will be equipped with from September 2010.

The eCall system was developed at the initiative of the EU Commission to help reduce the number of road traffic fatalities.

It consists of a GPS sensor and a mobile phone component, activated only in case of an accident (that is, when the airbags are triggered) and which can transmit data (for example, accident time, coordinates and driving direction of the vehicle) to an emergency call centre.

Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT researchers found that this infrastructure can also be used to warn the population. Once the cars are equipped with a radio receiver, their horns can be triggered in case of disaster.

Guido Huppertz from the INT has worked on the system and explains the advantages of honking cars.

“All hitherto suggested solutions such as mobile phones or smoke detectors only inform the respective device user. The entire population can only be informed if 100 per cent are equipped with these devices.”

The INT suggestion has a clear statistical advantage – a mere 14 per cent of the registered vehicles are sufficient to provide extensive alarming, says a release of the Fraunhofer Institute.

If all new vehicles are equipped with eCall from the end of next year, the warning system may be ready for use after an establishment phase of two to four years, Huppertz predicts.

Reports indicate that the Perseid meteor shower, which will be visible on August 11 and 12, would yield more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time.

Meteors are bits of dust or rock that collide with earth’s atmosphere and heat up gas particles to produce a glowing trail.

A handful of meteors can be seen each hour on any clear night, but during a meteor shower dozens may be visible.

The Perseid shower occurs each year when the Earth passes through a stream of debris shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 130 years or so and last passed through the inner solar system in 1992.

The meteors generally get incinerated before they can strike the ground, creating the streaks of superheated, glowing air we call ‘shooting stars’.

According to a report in National Geographic News, this year, from any vantage point in the world, you might see more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time, when the moon’s glare will be weakest-late night on August 11and into the wee hours of August 12, local cloud and lighting conditions permitting.

The highest concentration of Perseid meteors hitting Earth’s atmosphere will occur during the afternoon of August 12, when they’ll be largely invisible.

The Perseid sky show is “always the best annual meteor shower,” said Bill Cooke, the lead for Nasa’s Meteoroid Environments Office in Alabama.

“Visually, the best are the Geminids. But December nights are cold, and people don’t want to freeze their rears off,” he added.

The Perseid meteors will appear to originate in the northeastern sky, near the constellation Perseus, and to shoot off in all directions, according to Brian Skiff, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff.

“Since the radiant point is close to Perseus, it is common to see them streaking right along the Milky Way, even as far away as Sagittarius,” he said.

“After midnight, Perseus will have risen higher in the sky, and the meteors can be seen in just about any direction,” he added.
