The feature, called Tellme, enables the users for conducting searches by means of the voice recognition software. Spoken commands can be converted into text messages.

The Intrepid handset of Samsung will be the first mobile to come with this feature. This feature is being expected to provide the users with a faster and friendlier search.

Writing on a Bing blog, Microsoft Mobile senior director Dariusz Paczuski stated: “The number of steps it takes to complete your tasks may not be a real problem for when you are sitting at your desk or at home on the couch.

“But what about those times when you are carrying that bag of groceries in one arm and you need to text your spouse that you need them to pick up the kids from soccer practice? Or walking up and down a busy Manhattan sidewalk?”

The Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Intrepid will be launched over Sprint network in US later this month.

Just last week we took a peek at the graphical enhancements on the iPhone 3GS, but this demonstration didn’t rely on the factory goods from Apple. Instead, a recent OTOY demonstration put to use some of AMD’s newest GPU technology in order to play back one of the leading-edge 3D titles on a smartphone. In short, OTOY renders the game on remote servers and then sends information to a recipient; needless to say, an HDTV displayed all sorts of artifacts, but on a screen that’s just a few inches large, those flaws become invisible. So, is this really the killer app to supplant Apple’s own App Store for gaming on the iPhone? We get the feeling OTOY needs at least few clean-cut commercials with little-known underground music before they can bank on that.

Thankfully, Qualcomm has now come out and clarified that situation so Palm doesn’t have to, and detailed the complete specs for the MSM7627 chipset that powers the Pixi. The big news there is that the chipset packs two ARM cores on a single chip, including one dedicated 600MHz applications processor, and a separate 400MHz modem processor to offload some of the heavy lifting. Otherwise, the phone is said to pack a 200MHz, OpenGL 2.0-supporting GPU for some decent gaming capabilities, and a 320MHz application DSP to handle multimedia on the device, including full 30 fps WVGA video encoding and decoding. Hit up the link below for the complete rundown.

Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom unveiled on Tuesday a plan to merge their British mobile units, looking to save 4 billion euros ($5.76 billion) and aiming to get regulatory approval by mid 2010 for the venture.

Analysts said both carriers were likely to hold off from any major investments until the venture starts.

“I don’t think there will be major changes in the short term, but the merger will decrease the cake to be shared,” said analyst Hannu Rauhala.

Nokia Siemens has been the key network gear supplier for both vendors, while also operating Orange’s network.

“Nokia Siemens faces the biggest downside risk on the infrastructure side. In supplying both networks, NSN is exposed to almost all of the planned capex savings,” Nomura analyst Stuart Jeffrey said in a note.

Nokia Siemens Networks said it was too early to comment on possible impacts to its business.

“We believe we are in a good position to help the joint venture to succeed,” Ashish Chowdhary, incoming chief of Nokia Siemens’ services unit, said.

The telecoms equipment market has seen cut-throat competition for new business during the past few years, driven by Asian vendors, and the outlook remains tough.

Ericsson provides managed services to T-Mobile, while also supplying 2G network. A spokesman for Ericsson declined to comment.

As smaller smartphone brands slug it out to set their phones apart from the now standard set-up of camera, email access and games, software is emerging as the lynchpin in the battle for dominance in the fast-growing sector.

Second-tier vendors such as Samsung Electronics, Motorola and Taiwanese phone maker HTC may be worst hit as they could go the way of their bigger cousin, the PC, with little to distinguish one brand over another.

These players have to choose between the high cost of developing their own systems, or selling phones that look and behave the same as any other on the market.

Developing their own platform allows brands to offer applications such as social networking sites and software unique to the phone, helping them attract users.

“It’s really a must-do for all smartphones brands at this point,” said Andrew Chang, an analyst at the Daiwa Institute of Research.

“If you don’t have your own interface, your phone is going to be relegated to the cheap corner where everything looks the same with low brand recognition and very thin margins.”

Many of the low-tier brands are likely to turn to Google’s Android operating system as this will allow them to benefit from the search giant’s brand name and take advantage of the myriad of applications already available.

HTC is the only phone maker that has launched its phones running on Android, on top of other phones it already has that run on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.

Android’s open-source nature, meaning developers can customise the software to meet their own needs, is set to attract more brands, as it allows them to design their own system without having to do so from scratch.

“Android is really the way to go for the smaller smartphone brands,” said Richard Ko, an analyst at Jih Sun Securities, who said any brand with less than 10 per cent of the market should not try designing their own software.

“There’s the software support that Google can provide, and it already has some form of an ecosystem around it.”

Some brands are already turning to Google.

After losing market share for years, Motorola has made what is viewed as a make-or-break bet on Google’s mobile software, hoping the partnership with the giant Web company can help it win back customers.

About half of all smartphones run on Nokia’s Symbian operating system, with Research in Motion and Windows Mobile coming in at second and third place, respectively.

The one-year-old Android system remains a relatively small player in the field right now, with most analysts putting its share of the market at less than 1 per cent.
