The free iPhone app trains Hogwarts’ newest students in the art of casting spells and prepares them for duels with other wizards.

Launched three weeks ago by ‘pocketfungames’, the game, trains players for wizard battles by making them practice motions with an iPhone while reciting an incantation.

After boot up, the application asks aspiring wizards and witches to flick their wrist to find a matching wand and are asked a series of questions to determine the house in which they will reside.

One can even give themselves a wizard name and upload a photo before getting on to studying spells and proposing duels with other players.

Using the iPhone as a stand-in for a magical wand, players study and practice movements in a virtual classroom while reciting incantations such as “Flabilis” to cast the spell for levitation, for example.

After casting a spell, each player’s magic wand ability is scored by a percentage, reported The Christian Science Monitor.

Later, one can even cast spells outside the classroom and find another nearby wizard by using the iPhone’s GPS capabilities to challenge another player to a duel.

Players then take turns reciting incantations and moving their wrists in semi-circles and other patterns to conduct various spells on each other.

And when the duel gets over, the players’ scores are calculated to see who had the most effective spells.

Ms Sara Lewis, who created the app, told TechCrunch that the game receives around 2,000 downloads per day.

A Web-based game could help educate teenagers with HIV infection on how to avoid transmitting the virus, a pilot study suggests. The game, dubbed +CLICK (Positive Click), allows users to navigate through a “shopping mall” where they can choose among different lessons on abstinence, condom use and birth control, as well as video clips featuring other HIV-positive young people and experts on the virus.
In the new study, the Texas researchers who developed the game tested it out on 32 HIV-positive 13- to 24-year-olds, having each patient use the programme in the waiting room during a routine doctor visit. They found that most patients — 84 per cent — rated the game as easy to use, while 94 per cent said it was “trustworthy,” and 88 per cent would use the game again.
Moreover, the game boosted patients’ confidence in their ability to use condoms properly and to delay having sex, the researchers report in the journal AIDS Care.
“We wanted to create +CLICK so that we could help educate youth on the importance of making proper, healthy decisions to protect their relationships and themselves, as well as help to reduce transmission (of HIV),” lead researcher Dr Christine M. Markham, of the University of Texas School of Public Health, said in a news release from the university.
“Participants were very receptive and enthusiastic about playing the game,” Amy Leonard, another researcher on the study, said in the news release. “They also liked that they were able to ask the clinicians questions about what they learned on the lessons.”
Larger, longer-term studies are now needed to see whether the Web programme goes beyond changing attitudes and actually leads to higher rates of safer sex and abstinence, according to the researchers.

It happened in EVE Online, where more than 300,000 subscribers pay $15 a month to play. They gain wealth through hard work, manipulating the market, or killing rivals in a distant future where humans have colonized the stars in an online game similar to World of Warcraft and Second Life.
EBank, EVE’s largest player-run financial institution which has thousands of depositors, is at the center of the scandal.
“Basically this character was one of the people that been running EBank for a while. He took a bunch of (virtual) money out of the bank, and traded it away for real money,” said Ned Coker, of the Icelandic company CCP, which developed the game.
The CEO of EBank, a 27-year-old Australian tech worker who identified himself only as Richard and used the online name Ricdic, embezzled about 200 billion interstellar kredits, the game’s virtual currency.
He broke the rules of the game by exchanging the stolen virtual funds for $6,300 Australian ($5,100) with players who preferred to buy virtual money rather than earn it playing the game.
“It was a very on the spot decision,” the married father of two explained in an interview.
He said a spam email for a black market website that traded online money for real cash popped up on his screen, prompting him to exchange the virtual cash for real money to cover a deposit on his house and expenses related to his son’s medical problems.
“I saw that as an avenue that could be taken, and I decided to skim off the top, you could say, to overcome real life (difficulties).”
Word of the theft spread quickly within EVE. Panicked customers started a run on the bank, worried that they would lose the money they had amassed by hunting space pirates or mining asteroids.
Ironically, if Ricdic had merely stolen the online money he could have stayed in the game. But exchanging the virtual cash for real dollars broke the rules and CCP banned Richard’s EBank accounts.
“It unbalances the game,” Coker said.
Players can only buy virtual money with real money, or use virtual cash to pay for playing time, but they cannot exchange game money for the real thing.
“We have never seen ourselves as gods who make the rules of social interaction,” said Eyjolfur Gudmundsson, an economics adviser to CCP. “You are able to lose the things you have created. That’s what makes the world interesting.”
Ironically, Richard had built a reputation as one of EVE’s few trusted players — a rare commodity in a game where repeatedly blowing up a violator’s spaceship was the only way to enforce some contracts.
Asked if he had any regrets about the scam, Richard said he felt he let down his fellow EBank staffers, many of whom he considered friends.
“I’m not proud of it at all, that’s why I didn’t brag about it. But you know, if I had to do it again, I probably would’ve chosen the same path based on the same situation,” he said.
EBank survived the crisis. But Richard will not be returning to EVE anytime soon.
“At the moment, we’ve got our hands full,” Richard said about his family responsibilities in the real world.

Golf fans have been waiting for this to the best-known game with apprehension after the largely disappointing reception given to its predecessor. The 2008 version failed to build on the success of the 2007 original, but PGA Tour 09 gets the series back to par.
Among the new features is a training mode, in which Tiger’s coach highlights aspects of the player’s game that could be improved based on shots in previous games and challenges.
In truth, these are little more than extended practice sessions of specific shots but they do provide a skills boost that applies to the next game.Unlike previous games in the Tiger Woods franchise, the skills gained are not static – your rating in areas such as shot power and accuracy improve as you complete training challenges, compete on the tour and purchase improved kit at the pro store with your winnings. But play badly in the next game – for instance taking more puffs to finish than on previous courses – and the rating goes down. This means concentrating on game basics and not just relying on previous achievements.
Another useful new tool is the club tuner, which analyses your natural swing using the analogue stick and suggests tweaks to aspects such as the degree of elevation on the face of specific clubs and a natural bias towards drawing or fading shots. You can then practice shots using the new settings, which we found to be of greater value than the actual training challenges.
The appeal of this title lies in its gameplay and this is an area where EA rules supreme. The analogue swing stick takes some practice but gives a fine degree of control over shot power. The application of draw and fade has been transferred to the bumper buttons, which if anything makes this subtle control a little too easy.
The biggest change has been made to the putting preview, which is more realistic than previous versions, taking account of the fact that the ball will deviate from the predicted line if less than 100 per
cent power is applied.
The preview line itself is easier to read, though, and because of this can be used only once when weighing up a puff. As you get only one shot at using the tool, this encourages you to read the contours and elevation of the The online side of the game has been speeded up by simultaneous drives so you don’t have to wait for each player connected to your game to take shots in sequence. Instead, different coloured lines show the trajectory of each ball as it is played.

There are some new courses, with a wider range of terrains to freshen up the look and an even more detailed game face application so you can style your golfer’s appearance to meet tour standards. On the commentary side, Scotland’s Sam Torrance has been added to the otherwise transatlantic team. There’s not as much humour as in PGA Tour 08- they could do worse than getting Peter Alliss in for the next update.

Together, they conducted their first ever raid in a Mumbai suburb and seized two Sony Playstations and 230 game discs.Piracy in India has increased due to easy accessibility to the Internet and broadband. As much as 90 percent of the games sold in India are pirated. This is a clear concern for the industry that claims to lose millions of dollars to piracy each year.
The availability of pirated games on websites and peer-to-peer networks has made accessibility to pirated games relatively widespread. Even with more international brands entering the Indian market and prices dropping, piracy rates remain high.
