Google breaks down web browsers for the masses October 12, 2009 4:00 pm by Ben Sillis Categories: Apps & Software, Apps & Software Video

The browser war between Google, Mozilla and Microsoft rages on, but if you’re confused by all this talk of rendering and javascript, help is at hand. Google’s taken the time to go back to basics and explain just exactly what a browser is with a new site and video.

If you think Chrome is just for cars, and Firefox is something you might find defecating in the garden, you’d do well to check out Google’s new site, whatbrowser.org. It’s a clean, easy to use site that explains the basics of web browsing for those not in the know. It covers the Jack and Jill stuff, such as how a browser differs from an OS and other software, and even tells you what one you’re running.

You can take a look at Google’s video here, and heading over to the site itself will let you see what your other browser options are: it auto-detects if you’re on Mac or PC, and will tailor your options accordingly.

AnyColor is a Firefox extension that allows us to create custom themes for your browser . you Can easily modify almost all aspects of the interface such as buttons, title bar and so on, all through custom color schemes.

The good news is that using AnyColor you can almost completely change the look of Firefox, and not even have to restart the browser to do so because the changes are so dynamic, so you can try a large number of schemes in a few seconds and Select which you like.

AnyColor allows you to:

Choose your own colors and preview them immediately.

Select background images for the top and bottom part of the browser’s main window.

Choose one of the built-in appearance presets or create your own.

Create “appearance scripts” and change the browser’s appearance using dynamically generated content

Ultimately, AnyColor stands as a good and effective alternative (Personas ) to customize Firefox to the maximum with a complete visual appearance according to user’s tastes, offering simple and easy handling.

Google Chrome users are missing it. But not for long, here is the way to install Grease monkey script on Google Chrome. This can be used to run JavaScripts in Chrome. The procedure is as follows :

Through Greasemetal :

To use the Greasemonkey scripts on chrome ,first you need to install Greasemonkey. As Greasemonkey cannot be installed on Chrome there is a software called Greasemetal, a Greasemonkey type utility which is specially built for Chrome.

Download Greasemetal

The above link will download an exe file which can be installed on your computer. After you are done with the installing RUN the software. A new window will be opened in chrome confirming your installation of Greasemetal.

Running JavaScripts on Google chrome :

After the installation a folder named Userjs will be created in the My Documents Folder. SO If you want to use any Script all you have to do is to copy down the downloaded User Scripts into Userjs directory. That’s it. Now you can enjoy running java scripts in Google Chrome browser.

The first Android-powered Smartphone has a 3.2in touch display that flips out to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The device is 4.60 inches tall, 2.16 inches wide, 0.62 inches deep and weighs 5.6 ounces. There’s also a trackball for navigation that’s similar to the navigation method on many of the newer BlackBerry handsets. The G1 also sports an accelerometer that automatically orients the content of the screen depending on how the user is holding it.
T-Mobile is still in the process of building out its 3G network in the U.S. G1′s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity should help users where T-Mobile has a weak network. E-mail comes in two tiers on the G1. The upper tier is given to Gmail, which gets its own application; others get relegated to the generic e-mail application. Google also gets a direct link to its online map service.
The G1 sells for $179 and is locked in to T-Mobile shops presently. In India, however the phone is still not announced.

Opera 9.6 is now available in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. In addition to accelerating browsing speed and enhancing unique features such as Opera Link and Opera Mail in this release, Opera aimed to make its desktop browser as accessible as the enormously popular Opera Mini browser for mobile phones amongst Indian Web users.
“India has definitely shown Opera the love with their devotion to Opera Mini. We are giving the love back today by ensuring that Indians from New Delhi to TamilNadu can use Opera in their own languages. This support also extends to our email client, Opera Mail,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “I am excited to be in India during the launch of Opera 9.6, meeting with
local fans and discovering what Opera can do to make Internet browsing in India even better.”
Opera usage in India is spreading rapidly. Since the beginning of 2008, Opera has experienced a 150% increase on daily desktop download in India.
Opera 9.6 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu is now available as a free download at http://www.opera.com/.
Opera Software currently has an office in Chandigarh, India, and has previously partnered with local companies including TATA, Spice Mobile and Meridian Mobile in order to achieve great reach in the Indian market.

Mozilla has released the first beta of a mobile version of its increasingly popular Firefox browser.
The browser, codenamed Fennec, is available only on Nokia’s N810 and N880 internet tablets at this stage, but Mozilla is including a PC emulator so that developers can try out the software’s capabilities on other platforms.
“Fennec is being tested pretty hard now, and by people who love to find bugs,” said Mark Finkle, platform evangelist at Mozilla.
“We are finding and fixing lots of issues now. It is not entirely landed yet and will likely get some tweaks as we iterate on the design.”
The software is still in its early stages and has had to have plug- ins like Flash disabled, but the release comes sooner than expected. Mitchell Baker, chairman of the Mozilla Foundation, said recently that a mobile version of Firefox was not planned for release until 2010.
Finkle explained that that Mozilla is planning shortly to release a version of the browser for Windows Mobile, but did not detail any plans for a Symbian compatible version of the application.
