OpenOffice is a complete office suite OpenOffice designed to rival the very expensive Microsoft Office family of programs. With a word processor, spreadsheet program, presentation maker and drawing utility, it might not be as refined as its more expensive counterpart, but it’ll get all your work done with relative ease.

Writer, the word processor, has most of the features you are used to, including an on-the-fly spell checker, autoformat correction, and basic page layout control. Additionally, you can export documents directly to the PDF format, and there are also a number of wizards that make workflow a little easier.
Similarly, it won’t be too hard to get started with CaIc, the spreadsheet program. A number of design themes as well as styles and formatting control make it easy to present complex data sets, while little features such as natural-language formulae and the Scenario Manager make cross-comparisons and analysis easier.
Impress is the presentation maker.
Rounding out the trinity of office applications, it includes the standard drawing and diagram tools, along with 3D animation and effects.
OpenOffice could represent significant savings in software licenses for a large organization, but it’s tough to move away from something as familiar as Microsoft Office. Nevertheless it’s good to have an option, especially one that is interoperable with Office file formats. And it’s available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux in more than 60 languages.
